The school has two sites, both of which are within the Freeport Mining concession, 3 degrees south of the equator in West Papua. Despite the fact that West Papua houses only 0.01% of the world’s population, it is home to 15% of the world’s languages, is incredibly mineral rich, has one of the few equatorial glaciers left in the world, and has a vibrant tribal hunter-gatherer/farming society which, in many areas, hasn’t significantly changed its way of life for 40,000 years.

The lowlands site is located in Kuala Kencana (Kuala Kencana means “Golden River” in Indonesian), about 30 miles from the Arafura Sea and is in a dense tropical rainforest. The KK site has plenty of well appointed classroom space positioned in very attractive, purpose created grounds.

The site was cut out of the rainforest and provides a magnificent backdrop to the school’s immediate environment. Kuala Kencana has an average annual rainfall of 35 feet/10 meters and thus provision for plenty of covered shelter for all outdoor activities has been made.  The spacious KK site includes a covered sport hall area, a very well stocked library and a computer room.  

Kuala Kencana site is near the town of Timika; a relatively undeveloped area housing approximately 150,000 people. Timika is situated just outside the PTFI concession area.

Facilities found in the KK  township consist of a community centre housing a coffee shop, Hero Grocery Store (a well known Asian grocery store chain), Guardian Pharmacy, Hero Department Store, a hairdresser, a very well equipped state of the art gymnasium, a couple of restaurants, a community library and a hall facility. There is a world class PGA golf course and facilities at KK. This provides a focal point for some of the social activity in the town. The proximity to the Hotel Rimba Papua allows for alternative social activities as does the excellent swimming complex situated near the school grounds.
