Mount Zaagkam International School is owned and operated by P.T. Freeport Indonesia. Located in the Indonesian province of Papua, near the town of Timika, it consists of two sites, one located in the highlands (Tembagapura), while the other is located in the lowlands (Kuala Kencana). Each site services the children of expatriate employees pertinent to their work location. Tembagapura Site is located at 6500 feet in the mining town of Tembagapura ("Copper Town" in Indonesian). Cool, rainy and often cloudy, it may not seem the ideal location but surrounded by high montane forest it possesses a rare and rugged beauty of its own. Kuala Kencana Site is located in the mining town of Kuala Kencana ("Gold Estuary" in Indonesian). Nestled in amongst the beautiful New Guinea rainforest, it is close to sea level and with a hot and humid climate. General Information Mt. Zaagkam International School consists of two sites, one located in Kuala Kencana and the other in Tembagapura, West Papua, Indonesia. The Tembagapura site opened in 1972 when P.T. Freeport began its copper mining operations nearby. The Kuala Kencana site opened in 1996 and serves many of the administrative personnel who support P.T. Freeport's mining operation. The school is company owned and operated for the educational needs of expatriate families employed by PT Freeport and their sub-contractors. The school currently offers educational programs for three-year-olds through eighth-grade. Current enrollment is 60 students. The school uses a broad-based, international curriculum as found in the United States, Australia, Canada and New Zealand. The school is currently authorized to offer the Primary Year's Programme of the International Baccalaureate, a curriculum particularly well-suited to smaller international schools. Class enrollment is small, ensuring students both individualized attention and a variety of academic opportunities.
The staff of the school is an international group of experienced teachers, drawn primarily from the United States, Australia and New Zealand. |
